Adjusting from Traditional Learning
Changing from traditional classroom learning to online learning can be quite an adjustment but it is well worth it.
Students make the common mistake of thinking that online learning is an easy way out and that they will have to put less time in because they do not have a set class time. That is not that case at all! In fact, it takes more on the student’s part because they must do a lot of independent learning and reading where as in a traditional class you can easily collaborate with others and you have a teacher mentoring you.
Not to worry because there are many ways around this. With the technology of emails and instant messenger it is easy to contact your teacher and build lasting friends. Online classes have the same requirements and opportunities as traditional classes do, but just in a different media. You will be faced with assembling online groups in which you can set up online chats and exchange emails or even phone numbers.
Another adjustment is that you will be earning participation by posting to news groups. These news groups help the students to reinforce their learning and ask questions as they would in a traditional class. It is more efficient because you will complete the reading but not have to sit through a long class.
With independent reading a student can take as much or as little time as they need to learn the material. In traditional classrooms students are forced to sit through classes to learn material that they may or may not need assistance with.
That is the benefit of online learning! You will have deadlines, but you can work at your own pace and at a time that is convenient for you. It will take a bit of adjustment, but after you are on your second class you will never want to go back to a traditional class again!
It is important that for your first online class you allow additional time for your studies and to be open minded and not get frustrated or discouraged. Always talk to your fellow classmates and professor if you do not understand something.
Learning through an accredited online college class can be a rewarding experience if you practice to be disciplined enough to pace your studies and assignments to be completed in a timely manner.
