Being an Adult College Student on Campus

Adults Taking Over the Campus? –

The rate of adults returning to college to obtain a degree has grown in astronomical proportions in recent years. Adults are beginning to take over college campuses, much to the dismay of traditional students.

Interacting with Traditional Students

Being and adult college student on campus can have its pros and cons. Professors tend to take you more seriously, but at the same time, younger students may not take you seriously...remember, they still know everything!

Adult students are a bit more limited with time considerations and therefore tend to take their education very seriously. While at times you may feel as if you are attending daycare, remember, there are many traditional college students who are just as serious about their education as your are. It is up to you to scope out those who are there for the learning process and those who are there looking for a free ride.

At times it can be difficult to determine the motivations of students, but it usually only takes a week or two to determine who is serious and who isn't. You definitely want to steer towards serious students when comes to group projects and not towards students who view you as a parent who will do all the work for them and help them ace the class. Your time is limited and precious; pick your group partners carefully.

Interacting with Professors

Professors understand the burden you are under and will normally go out of their way to help you, but don't expect special attention or a free ride. You will still be required to do the same amount of work as every other student in the class.

If you have special needs due to family situations, be sure to let your professor know the circumstances. They are not there to try to outsmart you and cause you to fail, they want to see you succeed and will often work with you if they are aware of any unusual situations, but you have to tell them! They can't read your mind, or even your body language when it is slumped over your desk due to stress and lack of sleep!

Communication is Key

Communication is the key to having a successful college experience. You have unlimited options to choose from when communicating with other students and professors. You can use the good old fashioned phone, email, texting, or even face to face. Use whatever method you are most comfortable with to communicate, just be sure to do it.

It is critical that you communicate with your professors and group partners! Your future depends on it!
