Career Research
One of the most important aspects of college is to choose the correct major so that you can pursue your dream job. A common mistake that college students often make is to choose a major and not take the time to research specific jobs and starting salaries. We recommend that while choosing majors you have a specific job in mind so that while you are in college you will have a focused area.
In each job there are certain requirements that you will need to get to the position that you want. This means that you may have to obtain certain certifications, further education, and sometimes a certain amount of years of experience in the field. All of these factors are extremely important to your college journey. Remember you will be spending a lot of time and money in college and you want to make it worth it in the end.
Talk to the career counselor at your college and they will help you to determine what jobs fields are out there and what they require. Keep the geographical location in mind. Many of your high paying jobs will be located in larger cities which may require you to commute an hour or so.
In addition to your local college, use the internet to get feedback on what others have to say about their job. Monster and Careerbuilder are great tools to use for research, or even look at the current job listings to see what entry level and mid level positions are out there. It is a great way to see what is in store for you once you graduate.
Do the research and write all of your goals down. Studies have shown that people who write down their goals and constantly think about their goals are more successful than those who do not.
Write down all of your short and long term goals. Cross them off as you complete them so that you feel like you have accomplished something. After each semester mark off all of the classes that you have completed and keep a constant list in your head of what the next step is.
Career research doesn't start when you end your college career; it starts with your first college class!
