Coping with more Freedom

Traditional Students must adjust from the routine and regulated High School atmosphere to an informal yet academically challenging college atmosphere. It is often hard for students to adjust to the new freedom that college brings because they must learn how to be disciplined and manage their time.

In high school parents and teachers often dictate how and when to study and complete assignments. If you are absent from school a parent must call in to verify that you are sick.

In college students may skip class as much as they want with few immediate consequences. Often, students will find out a few weeks later when they have a test that they should have come to class because they missed important material.

Start off on the right foot and be responsible for your education. In college you will want to have fun with your friends but you w ill also need to make sure that you are meeting you education requirements because that is your primary goal.

Organize your time and keep to your schedule. You do not always have to have the same formal schedule as you did in high school because some classes will be in the late afternoon or evening.

If you are not a morning person then work your schedule for you benefit but always remember that just because you schedule is different doesn’t mean that you do not have responsibilities. Don’t make the mistake that many freshmen make by going overboard and not realizing that they have responsibilities even though mom and dad are not there to regulate you.

You are now an adult and it is up to you to get the most from your education. Professors do not care if you skip class or fail. It is all up to you to make your own success and now enter the world of adulthood and responsibility.
