Dealing with Lack of a Family Structure

Going away to college where you are away from your family and friends can be a very emotional time. No matter how much you have said in the past “Oh I can’t wait to leave home and move out” all students will miss having a family structure when they move away to college.

Most students do not realize how much their parents have helped and supported them over the years. As you now enter into adulthood you will be forced into doing many of these things on your own.

Another emotional aspect is that you have recently graduated from high school and all of your friends are now split up and going their own separate ways so you feel even more empty and confused.

The important thing to remember is that in today’s age you can email or call anyone at anytime. Keep in touch with your family and friends to see how they are doing in college and compare notes. Call home to talk to talk to your parents and see what’s new and tell them how all of your classes are going.

You will feel better because more than likely talking to family and friends will comfort you and reassure you that you are not alone even though you may be miles away. Your support system will always be there if you maintain it.

Don’t let college get in the way of your relationship with your friends and family. Also, you will be making so many new friends that in time you will feel right at home while you are away at college.
