Benefits of Learning a Second Language

As the world continues to be more diverse, people must be open to learning new languages and culture of different countries.

I am sure that when you were in high school you had to take a few years of Spanish or French. Well, college is no different! Except in college you need to take more of a language and often the classes are much more challenging.

The important thing is to be open minded. Students will be surprised how much they will recognize different languages in the work place and in every day life. Heck at the very least, now you can watch “I love Lucy” and understand what Ricky is saying!

Students should consider completing a minor in a foreign language because many companies are now in need of employees who are bilingual. This can really help with your job search and enhance your resume, especially in you are a Communications major. More and more technical fields are now in need of Spanish speaking employees due to recently growing international business needs.

In any case, knowing a foreign language will allow you to have an edge over some of the other applicants when looking for a job. It can also help you with a promotion later down the road or allow you to travel with your company.

Another positive aspect is that if you plan to travel abroad you will be well prepared and not look like a goofy tourist with a dictionary! Learning a language also allows you to learn cultural aspects of a county. When traveling for business or personal, you should always look at the etiquette and culture of every country you go to. You would be surprised at some of the etiquette that different countries consider rude.

Learning a foreign language is never a waste of time. You will be amazed at how much you recognize and understand after you graduate and enter the business world.
